In 1778, the historic Battle of Monmouth took place in Manalapan Township . Formerly, part of Freehold Township , in 1848 it was established as an independent township. Today, Manalapan Township is the home to many landmarks dating back to the 1700's, which allow the township to maintain a historical feel. The battlefield is now a state park with many historical events that occur throughout the year. Agriculture continues to take up a significant portion of the township, residential and commercial development has been growing steadily in recent years. Manalapan is served primarily by state routes 33 & 9. It is close to NJ Turnpike exits 8A & 9 and Garden State Parkway exit 123.
